Year 3 Mini Tennis

After Easter the sun begins to shine and the temperatures rise, nice bright mornings and nice shiny evenings. This time of year was designed to play tennis! During this half term, the pupils will receive tennis lessons within school.

Working on their basic coordination, catching, feeding and movement, the pupils will improve and their basic net and wall skills to challenge one and other. Pupils will become familiar with the various shots used in tennis and try to play them with control and accuracy in order to outwit their opponents. Understanding the game, rules and scoring will all be part of this exciting block of work.

At the end of the training and preparation, eight pupils from each school come down to John Spence to take part in the annual Mini Tennis Competition. The competition will be divided into a boys and girls section, with each school offering four players from each. These will be ranked 1-4 with the strongest player taking up the number 1 ranking. The players will play against each other in a series of timed games against each other’s schools with the points being collated at the end. Each ranking player will play in a pool with four other players on a designated court. John Spence will provide the officials for the afternoon that will umpire and score the games in a professional manner.

Each player’s scores will be added to their team mates until we have a ranked player winner, an overall boy and girl and then an overall team winner. The winning team will go onto represent John Spence in the North Tyneside finals at a later date in the fabulous Churchill Tennis Centre.

Pupils will be asked to bring their own or schools rackets to take part in this challenging and skilful event. May the best team win
