We recognise that moving from a primary setting to a large secondary school can be daunting, we are determined to ensure all of our new students are supported throughout this process so that the transition is as smooth as possible.
We run the following transition events throughout the year:
- All primary year groups – specialised classrooms, such as Science and Technology, are available for primary schools to visit and use.
- Year 4 – Reading Buddies (Year 8 pupils visit primary schools to act as reading buddies for Year 4 pupils).
- Year 5 – Rising Stars (primary school students complete a project, “From the Sea Up”, about the maritime history of North Tyneside. This focuses on students’ academic, problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills).
- Year 5 – This is John Spence (a presentation about life in secondary school and about John Spence).
- Year 6 – Transition Days (our new Year 7 students have the opportunity to come together and take part in a range of lessons and activities).
- Year 6 – Transition Evening (an opportunity for our new Year 7 students and their parents to meet key staff at John Spence, gain further information about the school, and meet their child’s Year 7 form tutor).
Our SENCo works closely with the appropriate schools, families and individual students where there are additional needs that we need to be aware of.
