At John Spence we believe it is important that students who are More Able or have either a gift or a talent are recognised and are suitably catered for, both in the classroom as well as in extra-curricular activities.
Students are identified as More Able based on the following criteria:
- Level 5 in English or Maths or both at the end of Key Stage 2.
- High scores in school testing. This includes both whole school testing such as MiDYis and departmental assessments.
- Teacher recommendation. This can be proof of outstanding work produced on a regular basis or through a teacher identifying outstanding ability through other methods.
A student can be identified as More Able and having a gift in the following subjects:
- Maths
- English
- Science
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Information Technology
- Geography
- History
And a student can be identified as being More Able and having a talent in the following subjects:
- Performing Arts
- Music
- Physical Education
- Technology
Once students are identified as being More Able, teachers are alerted of this status and will both encourage and challenge More Able students in lessons. Work will be differentiated and More Able students will be given extension tasks in order for them to achieve their potential. Opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities will also be offered.
