Under new Head Coach Dave Godbold Table Tennis really took off again in John Spence during 2012/13.
Most of the club’s players have progressed to modern fast attack table tennis bats and are showing improvement in modern techniques of play.
We have 5 girls who throughout last year have attended almost every academy session and after school club. The girls entered the English Schools Table Tennis competition at Sandhill School, Sunderland coming 3rd in Tyne and Wear. An excellent achievement for their first year in the sport.
The Girls also attended the ladies international match at Gateshead leisure centre when England took on Spain.
The boys have shown good improvement too, with Lewis McGoldrick coming from number five at the start of the season to the number 1 position.
Most of the boys have improved over the year with special mentions to our first five Daryl Penton, David Office, Matty Robson and Callum Cooke.
These boys excelled in the North Tyneside Schools competition in November defeating Monkseaton and Thomas More who had enjoyed many victories over the past few seasons. David office won the final match 3-0 allowing John Spence to progress to the Tyne and Wear Finals.
In the Tyne and Wear Finals the players performed extremely well beating Newcastle School for Boys, Whitburn Comprehensive, Biddick and Boldon School to win the trophy.
The regional finals were held at Northfield school in Billingham with the boys coming up against top class county standard juniors. They performed well and gained valuable experience winning a couple of matches to finish 3rd out of 6 teams.
The Friday evening club has also proved popular. This session is more fun based but shows potential academy players the standard required to get into the school teams and academies.
Nicola Toby, Lewis McGoldrick and David Office represented Newcastle United FC in the Premier League for sport national competition. All performed well in their respective competitions with Lewis and David winning their events. Daryl Penton also competed in the local Northumberland junior closed reaching the semi final of the Cadet event.
During the summer we ran some tournaments with players from John Spence entering, England coach Matthew Stanforth came along to scout for players with real Table Tennis potential.
The school will host a regional training camp during October half term.
We now have a Club in operation on a Wednesday evening 6-9pm with around 10 local league players attending plus some of our more able student players. Hopefully with the better standard the boys can improve to a point where we can enter a team in the local league.
