Gifted and Talented Provision

At John Spence we believe it is important that students with either a gift or a talent are recognised and are suitably catered for both in the classroom as well as in extra-curricular activities.

Students are identified as either gifted or talented based on the following criteria;

  • High scores in school testing. This includes both whole school testing such as MiDYis and departmental assessments.
  • Teacher recommendation. This can be proof of outstanding work produced on a regular basis or through a teacher identifying outstanding ability through other methods.

A student can be identified as having a gift in the following subjects:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Science
  • Modern Foreign Languages
  • Information Technology
  • Geography
  • History

And a student can be identified as having a talent in the following subjects:

  • Performing Arts
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Technology

Once students are identified as being gifted and/or talented, they are placed on a gifted or talented register for that subject. Students are not removed from the register if they show a drop in standards of performance, as it is the belief at John Spence that students do not simply loose an outstanding ability in a subject. If they do show a drop in standards or performance this is noted on that register as underachieving and support is put in place to identify the cause of the underachievement.

The following document is a more comprehensive guide on identification within school.

The The National Programme for Gifted and Talented Education web site is essential reading for both you and your child if your child is gifted or talented.
