The Curriculum at John Spence

By law, all children in the UK between the ages of 5 and 16 follow the national curriculum, which means much of what our students study is fixed by legislation.

In Key Stage 3 all students follow the same curriculum, whilst in Key Stage 4 an element of choice is introduced via the Options System.

Additional curricular activities are available for some students in Key Stage 4 which extend the range of the normal school curriculum, whilst we make a wide range of extra-curricular activities available to all students.

Our curriculum is kept under constant review and is amended according to national legislation, new initiatives and the needs of our students.

The subjects taught and the amount of time allocated to each subject is as follows, click the Key Stage that is relevant to you.

Key Stage 4 - Year 10

Students must study all ‘core’ subjects then make Option choices. Most students have four choices to study at GCSE level from four option blocks. There is also a vocational choice for those who want to follow this pathway. In this way students have a guided choice to give them some freedom to select courses which they are interested in. Students therefore have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which they can personalise to their own needs.
